Ancient Art Tattoo Studio is Tidewater’s longest running, artist-owned, tattoo studio chain. Established in the mid 1970’s, Ancient Art opened the doors to its first tattoo parlor in Yorktown, Virginia in the early 1980’s. Decades later, after overturning several citywide tattoo bans, this ground-breaking chain still stands strong with four reputable tattoo shops located across the Hampton Roads area: Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton and Yorktown.

Ancient Art Tattoo Studio’s founder, J.D. Crowe, has long paved the way for legalized tattooing in Hampton Roads. His persistence to educate the government on healthy tattoo practices during his historic battle with the cities of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake resulted in the overturning of a 50-year ban on storefront tattoo parlors—the government judging to regulate them rather than banning them. J.D. Crowe later provided assistance to the Department of Health, preparing guidelines and diagrams outlining proper safety procedures in a tattooing environment to help the department develop its new legislation. This iconic victory eventually led to similar long-time bans being lifted in many of the surrounding cities, ultimately helping to raise awareness of proper health codes, practices and procedures in an industry once plagued by underground operations.
