The laws regarding underage tattooing are potentially about to change in the state of Illinois, USA. A new bill has been written that, if passed, would give harsher punishments for those who misrepresent a child under the age of 18 in order to get a tattoo. Right now, the law states that someone who is usually deemed underage can still be tattooed as long as there is a parent present- this new law will ensure that a child’s parent is definitely there, making tattooing safer in the state.

The bill is sponsored by state Senator Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), and certifies that anyone pretending to be a child’s parent in order to be tattooed could face up to 30 days in a county jail, probation or a fine of up to $1, 500. Speaking to the Chicago Sun Times, Dillard explained his backing of the bill: “As the father of two young daughters, I know how upset I would be if someone misrepresented their identity in order to help my child get a tattoo or piercing."

As tattooing gains popularity and develops constantly, it is great to see the law is starting to catch up in ways such as this. Hopefully, the bill will be passed, making tattooing even safer in the state.
