From forearms to toes, from hip joints to the nape, ring tattoos with or without a country map is trending as the biggest fashion statement at the London Olympics

When Kim Kardashian asked her followers on her microblogging site how many Olympians have the five rings as tattoo, pat came this reply from one: "It's like every singer has a note tattoo or melody symbol on the skin."

The five interlocking rings have been quite a craze among Olympians of yesteryear and now so much that they haven't shied away from inking them on their body. The trend, of course, was started by American freestyle sprinter Chris Jacobs who bagged three medals at the 1988 Seoul Games and started got the rings tattooed close to his racing suit line. Never mind the controversy over the misspelt ring tattoo of an Olympics' torch bearer this year, the ink trail continues this year with American gymnast Jonathan Horton's leotard displaying the name of his country and Ukrainian diver Illya Kvasha flaunting one on his shoulder blade. From the colour of the rings to the teasingly sensual selection of the body part to get inked, the London Olympics sure is hosting one big ring ceremony!

Khatuna Lorig

She taught Jennifer Lawrence to use a bow and an arrow for the critically acclaimed apocalyptic film, "The Hunger Games". But that's not the only thing that the American archer is known for. When she took aim at the bull's eye in Lord's this year, she made sure that the strategically positioned tattoo on her arm didn't miss lensmen's eyes.

Queen Underwood

Seattle's pugilist Queen Underwood sure has high hopes of carrying home memories of being a leader inside the Olympics' ring. And, of course, medals as well. But before that happens, the boxer, who claims that her heart is her biggest weapon, has ensured that her tattoo etches memories of her London trip on her body and, in extension, the heart too.

Sarah Poewe

The naughty selection of the body part for her rings ensured that German swimmer Sarah Poewe hogged the limelight more often than not when her fans got a poolside view of the London Olympics. As she slipped into her swimwear, Sarah's rings peeped out of her right hip joint. And boy, doesn't the ink gun's art speak a thousand words about the young swimmer's sex appeal?

Ryan Lochte

American swimmer Ryan Lochte hardly failed to get women drooling as he flashed his ring tattoo on the inside of his right bicep as he swam against the tide. His followers on Twitter are called Lochtenators and they beamed with joy when he flashed that million dollar smile revealing his giant red, white and blue diamond-encrusted grill after his win.

Micheal Phelps

Hearts melt and hormones go racing when Micheal Phelps' cheekily lowers his swimming trunks to reveal his rings. Some call him a bit of a narcissist for his choice of using two tattoos so dangerously low on his hips but then with someone who has won 19 medals in the Olympics already, such indulgences come naturally with the territory.

Brent Hayden

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Brent Hayden was in the news for all the wrong reasons. The Canadian swimmer was mistaken for a protester and beaten up by Greek riot police! Good news is, in London this year, his maple leaf and ring tattoo on his bare back has caught everyone's attention apart from his strokes. Bad news? Once the Games are over, Brent will tie the knot with financee Nadina Zarifeh!
