Jessica Carroll of Byron has worked for various tattoo and piercing companies for several years.

She said it was time to open her own studio. “I decided I’m going to go out and be in control of my own destiny,” she said.

Carroll did just that Friday opening Cherry Street Ink next door to Dolce Vita.

“I love downtown. It’s quaint, everybody knows everybody,” said Carroll who grew up in Lizella. “Macon was my stomping grounds growing up.”

Carroll hired most of her tattoo artists and piercers from the shop she formerly worked at in Warner Robins.

Leann Shurley was among the first Friday to get some fresh ink at the new shop, which is located across the hall from the former Jack & Coat retail store.

As she lay on her side on the tattoo table, Shurley, of Warner Robins, said she hardly ever comes to downtown Macon. “I had to use my GPS to get here,” she said over the sound of the buzzing needle tattoo artist Kyle Ake was using on her calf. “I’m here today because of him,” she said pointing to Ake. “Where he goes, I go.”

Shurley expects that to continue. “People will follow our artists,” she said.

With 21 tattoos, Shurley is quite comfortable during the process. As Ake colored the cartoon character on her leg, the college student had a textbook open and was studying.

Carroll said when she first started inquiring about a location downtown for a tattoo and body piercing studio, the responses she received were lukewarm.

Fortunately that’s changed. “Everyone has been so helpful,” she said.
