The city now has its first tattoo parlor.
Krazy Koi Tattoo opened Monday, Oct. 26, in a location near the Maine Mall, according to owner and tattoo artist Jeff Beaudoin.
Krazy Koi is located at 333 Clarks Pond Parkway, Suite 610. Pat Doucette, the city's code enforcement officer, said that, to the best of her knowledge, the tattoo parlor is the first and only one in the city.
Beaudoin, who grew up in South Portland, has been trying to open a tattoo parlor in the city since 2008. But his initial proposal led to a six-month moratorium on tattoo parlors and body piercing shops while the city's planning department researched ways to regulate the businesses.
In the end, however, the City Council refused to vote to approve special regulations for such businesses, and Beaudoin was free to open his business.
Beaudoin said this summer that he planned to rent a space at the corner of Broadway and Elm Street for his new shop.
However, that space at 868 Broadway is now rented to a garden design and gallery business.
Beaudoin said he had originally intended to open his shop in the location where it is now - a shopping center across from Home Depot. He said he still had a rental contract there so decided to open in that spot.
Krazy Koi is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. and on Sundays and Mondays by appointment, Beaudoin said. He said he currently does not offer body piercing, but plans to in the future.
